The sides have yellow, blue and red flames. There are a few black streaks among the flowers. I made this on my needle felting machine with wool fiber and wool yarn, then I wet felted it to make it really tight. The texture changes and the straight lines made by the yarn when laid out become crinkly as the wet felting progresses. This piece looks completely different each time it is turned 90 degrees. Why was I NOT worth it? This piece started as the small wet-felted piece in the center, where I saw a child in tears. Why was the child in tears? Because she had read about her ancestors’ beautiful world, but her world is a scorching one where the water is rising and the sun beating down when she isn’t coping with destructive storms. The earth itself, of course, is just fine and will survive no matter what. But for humans it is hard to merely survive. Her grandparents generation had not been willing to put her needs above their own short-term pleasures. Many of them were hollow, or at first seemed to be two trees. The interiors had died, decomposed, and been sloughed off in the rain. When I look at the snow-covered ground, I see the plants resting, gathering strength for the next season’s blooming.
